7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---

I haven't blogged in six months. Well, except for something I posted last week, which I'm not sure hit the mark I wanted it to.

--- 2 ---

I love being a doula! I'm so excited about this new "work" I'm doing. It doesn't feel like work because I love it so much! If you know someone who is considering hiring a doula, I'd be happy to talk with them (I offer a free one-hour consultation). Get the details at my website for Blessed Birth.

--- 3 ---

I met with a doula client last night for birth planning. Did I mention how much I love this job? :)

--- 4 ---

Hillair Creations is doing OK. Not tons of sales, but I enjoy doing that too so it's OK.

--- 5 ---

I am so glad the weather is finally nice. Except for the fact that next week's forecast looks like this:

See that 35 on Monday? That means it'll be possible that we get some slushy precipitation -- it starts with "s" and ends with "now." Sadly, in this area we're all too used to this possibility, even in May.

--- 6 ---

We're dealing with some uncertainty about a few things, and I'd appreciate your prayers for clarity and peace.

--- 7 ---

The last time I really blogged here were the kiddos:

Here they are now:

They've changed so much in six months! God, please slow down time!

This was a thrilling quick takes right?!?! Ha. Off to read some of the other great quick takes shared over at  Jen's. Have a great weekend everyone! :)

Having it all

When I was in college, I planned to be a TV news reporter. I was going to be the one who everyone knew, the one who made the big bucks on the national news network doing something I loved, the one who was confident and informed and successful.

Of course, at the end of my making-headlines-with-my-headlines-day, I would then go home to a loving husband and wonderful children. I'd have it all.

When I got into college and really started paying attention to the world outside my own little bubble, I was so drawn to be part of it, and in a big, public way. I thought maybe after some years in my successful reporting life I'd run for office or work for some non-profit in some capacity. Maybe I'd then be an "expert" called in for commentary on the day's events, or I'd be some great strategist/press secretary/all-around-important-person for someone's campaign for office.

You know, I'd be successful.

It's funny how things change. I've always wanted to be a mother, and if you ask my siblings, they'd probably agree that when we were all little I was somewhat of a "second" mother to them (read: extremely loving yet extremely bossy older sister). When I actually became a parent, my world and my worldview changed. People who talked about "having it all" when it came to work and family now seemed like people I couldn't understand anymore. What not long ago had been my dream became, very quickly, not important at all. How can this be, you might ask? What could possibly make my dream of being well-known, financially well-off, important in important circles of people, you know, successful, fade away?

I know I'm biased, but they are just so adorable.

Like I said, I always knew I wanted to be a mother, but until my first child was born, I didn't know how much it would really change me. I knew my daily routines would change, but the fundamental change that comes with conceiving and bringing a new life into existence is beyond words. I didn't know that staring at this beautiful little baby would be all I'd want to do for hours on end. I didn't know that waking up at night to nurse her would be so hard but so fulfilling. I didn't know that my dreams for my life would change so much because of such a small person.

That's the thing though...a little baby brings big blessings, big changes, and big dreams that you never realized you had.

So from the day Lauren was born, so was my new dream (well, I had been thinking about it for some time, but it was solidified as a goal right then). I wanted to be home with my child. I hadn't been working for network news -- I was at a job that I liked, but it definitely wasn't the big dream from college. My maternity leave was wonderful, but far too short, and I was back at work after eight weeks and Lauren was in daycare. A month later my company downsized and I lost my job, which was a mixed blessing. I was relieved to be home, but we went from two full-time salaries to one. We knew it would be tough, but we figured we'd be fine....and we were, until a month after that when Sean also lost his job.

Still, we made it by. We were soooo relieved that we had not started building a new home by getting a mortgage based on the jobs we had just lost. That had been the plan, but it had been put on hold for a few months right after Lauren was born. (Sleep deprivation pretty much causes you to function on a level that doesn't include making decisions on anything more than which sweat pants to wear and remembering to buy more coffee.)

About nine months after I lost my job, I started a new one. It was most certainly not what I wanted to be doing and it wasn't where I wanted to be. I did it though, because our family needed it. Every day I cried when I left Lauren at daycare. (We had a wonderful, caring, amazing daycare provider, and I'm so thankful for her.) To be honest, there wasn't a day I didn't cry until the last day she was at daycare. Leaving her there at 7:15 a.m. and picking her up at 5:30 p.m. was extremely difficult on me. A little more than a year later we found out we were pregnant with Thomas, and the dream I had been clinging to became even more important.

Thomas at about five months old.
After Thomas was born, I left that awful job I was at and my dream of being home with our children came true! The change in me and our entire family was unbelievable. I wasn't sad, stressed, or frantic everyday anymore. I had more than waking two hours with my kids each day. I wasn't getting home at 6:00 p.m., that's when we were eating dinner. My marriage was better (still is) because overall, I was a happier person. I was raising my kids...and since we weren't paying for daycare nor my nearly two hours of daily commuting, we were pretty much in the same financial spot we'd been in while I was working. The past few years have been challenging financially, but such a gift.

I know that in many families, both parents need to work. Honestly, our finances aren't great and we'd be much better off financially if I worked a 9-5 job, but emotionally our family would be worse off. I have no problem with women having careers if that's what they want. Among other things though, I think that women working outside of the home has contributed to the decline of the family.* I happen to think that raising children is the best job there is, and if you can handle your life on one income, that's awesome. (It's incredible what you can do when you want it badly enough, and what you're willing to do without.) I will never think that having someone else raise your kids is what's best. There are people I know who give their kids far more material things than any kid needs, and I sometimes wonder if that's why they have to work so much. Some people I know would be making more with one salary than we would with two, and yet both parents are working like mad. Now, I don't know what kind of debt there might be or what other circumstances go on in particular families, so I guess I can't know if both parents need to be working. In my mind though, giving your children your time is the best gift there is, so if you can swing it financially, why wouldn't you?

I wish our culture valued life and family more than having the newest pricey gadget so everyone will think we're cool.

Over the past few years I've discovered a new passion -- no longer the put-together news reporter in high heels dream, a much better one than that. I'm a doula. I get to help families welcome their babies, what could be better? Not to mention that it enables me to help support our family and still be home with our children almost all of the time.

My life is beautiful. Not because I make lots of money, but because I'm helping to raise children who are happy and compassionate. They are learning that helping others is important, and they're learning to appreciate the things they have, not constantly want more and more. It's a dream come true not because I'm living in my dream house and have money to buy more and more things, but because my home is filled with love and laughter (and dust, and laundry and dishes in need of washing because I'm no Martha Stewart, but I don't want to be). Not because I'm known by "important" people, but because I'm important to the people in my life.

Emily at about 10 months old.

My definition of successful might not be what the world's is, but I know that having children who are spoiled with love and time instead of being spoiled with electronics and the latest hot toy will help them to lead truly successful lives.

I get to spend my days giving hugs and kisses, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, folding laundry, playing Candyland, watching Sesame Street, changing diapers, vacuuming, teaching my children, playing with my children, laughing with my children, praying with my children, loving my children. This is my dream come true, and I'm so thankful for the life I have. It is a privilege, it is a gift, and I can't imagine it being much better than this.

*To all the work outside the home mothers, especially those who long to be at home: please do not take offense at this post. It is not meant to be a dig against you, it's simply a reminder for myself of why we've chosen the path we have.

Six months

I haven't blogged in six months. What the heck.

I started this blog because I love writing, I always have. I got caught up in the "this isn't good enough to hit publish" mentality and then I didn't have enough time to polish each post so I didn't bother writing. Hopefully I can get back into it, but I don't know. We have a lot of changes coming in the next few months so who knows if I'll have the energy to devote my time here too.

Don't mind my wonderings...

I feel so passionately about so many things, and it's just hard to find enough time for them all! For those of you who have checked in here only to find the last post written was still from October, thank you for checking in anyway. It's nice to know there are some people who were interested in what I was writing about.

A Chilly Quick Takes

--- 1 ---

It was 25 degrees when we got up this morning. It is too early for this kind of cold!

--- 2 ---

With the cold comes my complaining. I know, I'm working on it. But since I haven't conquered this bad habit yet, let me tell you about one of the worst parts of winter for me: the dry skin. Now sure, everyone gets dry skin sometimes, but I swear, I should buy lotion by the gallon. I get really, really, really, really dry skin on my hands, and it gets so bad that my knuckles actually start to bleed. With the onset of this lovely cold weather, guess what started to happen today? Yes, one day of this super dry very cold weather and they're bleeding already. :(  Sometimes prescription strength lotion helps, sometimes it doesn't. Anyone have any great advice?

--- 3 ---

Perhaps watching Lauren's nearly hour-long soccer game without gloves was a bad idea.

--- 4 ---

It was a good day though: did laundry, got the van cleaned out AND vacuumed, enjoyed seeing the sun despite the December-like temperatures, and now I'm going to make homemade macaroni and cheese to go with leftovers for dinner.

--- 5 ---

When it's a nice, sunny, not-frigid fall day (we get like, three of these each fall and had one the other day) this is what you get:

I love them so.

--- 6 ---

Shameless self-promotion: I'll be at the Yeah Baby Expo at the NYS Fairgrounds tomorrow at the CNY Doula Connection table. I've never been to the event but from what I've heard, there's lots of great baby and family information and freebies and such. I'm hoping to meet some people who are looking for a doula! If you can't make it to the event but would like to contact me with questions about the benefits of having the support of a doula, please do: (315) 761-3643, BlessedBirthDoula.ELP@gmail.com, or Facebook.com/BlessedBirthDoula. If you or anyone you know is considering having the support of a doula for their pregnancy, labor and birth, or postpartum time, please share my information with them. I offer a complimentary first appointment.

--- 7 ---

Time to get to that mac and cheese and curl up by the wood stove with my family.

7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---

I finally have a name for my doula business! Blessed Birth is ready for clients! My website should be up and running very soon, but for now Blessed Birth can be found at facebook.com/BlessedBirthDoula. I can be contacted via email at BlessedBirthDoula.ELP@gmail.com and at (315) 761-3643. If you or anyone you know is considering having the support of a doula for their pregnancy, labor and birth, or postpartum time, please share my information with them. I offer a complimentary first appointment.

--- 2 ---

It's amazing to me how the season changes almost immediately after Labor Day. We've had a few days of "summer" like weather, but for the most part fall is definitely here. Dressing Lauren for school is always crazy during fall and spring, since the mornings can mean 45 degree weather and the afternoons 70 degrees. Ah, the joys of living in Central New York....where it is very possible to use your heat and your air conditioning in the same day.

--- 3 ---

I really need to go through all the kids' clothes and sort out what doesn't fit and out-of-season stuff. I know it'll make me feel better to get that done but sometimes we still need shorts so I really can't just change everything out. Once I do get everything organized I'll feel so much better! The clutter is really getting to me lately.

--- 4 ---

I think we're almost ready to move Emily out of her crib and into a bed. (Yes, I'm crying a little bit.) She and Thomas are going to share the Narnia room and Lauren will have her own room. I'm excited and sad at the same time. This will be the first time in nearly six years that we won't have any use for a crib.

--- 5 ---

Because I'm a terrible blogger, I never posted these from the last day of kindergarten:

Love that smile!

Lauren is loving first grade! This year the bus wasn't early on the first day (like last year) so we got some good pictures last week:

My beautiful girl! She had a rash on half her body
(including her face) thanks to contact with
burdock leaves, and she was so itchy! Thankfully it's gone now.

Off to first grade!

 --- 7 ---

Good-bye summer....

SO much fun. Parents, if you can spare the money for something
like this, it provides HOURS of entertainment, during which you
can enjoy the laughter of your children AND uninterrupted adult
conversation because your kids are so busy having fun!

7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---

Why is it I always have great ideas for posts to write and then it comes to Friday and I can't think of seven little things to share?

--- 2 ---

This whole Chick-Fil-A "controversy" is just ridiculous. It's also scary, in that simply expressing your personal beliefs is becoming dangerous. Since when does saying you're for marriage mean you hate gay people? (Answer: IT DOESN'T.)

Then there's Boston's mayor who said he would do anything to prevent Chick-Fil-A from opening a restaurant in his city. According to the Boston Globe, he has since clarified his statement, saying that he only meant he would use as much political and social power as he could to block them, not refuse permits and such. Said the mayor:

"Yes, people have criticized me; I understand that,” Menino said. “But I have feelings . . . I have my First Amendment rights also. I’m expressing them.”

Oh, you're expressing your beliefs on an issue are you? Kind of like the owner of Chick-Fil-A expressed his beliefs?

If we had Chick-Fil-A near us I would go eat there right now.

We're nearing the end of NFP Awareness Week. I didn't even realize there was such a thing until a few days into the week, but I'm glad there is. If you're new to Natural Family Planning and want to learn more, go here for lots of great resource links. Also make sure to check out iusenfp.com and 1flesh.org for more great information.

--- 5 ---

If you're looking for a doula and would like to interview me, please contact me. :)

--- 6 ---

Some of the things I find on Pinterest really crack me up. If I were good enough at knitting I would totally make these for my kids:

--- 7 ---

I got a whole tub of games for $12 at an auction last weekend! Checkers, two chess sets, Chinese Checkers, tons of marbles, Yahtzee, Battleship, and two Star Wars games: Star Wars Monopoly and another Star Wars game that's interactive with a VHS tape. Now if only our VCR still worked! Hoping we get some good family time and can play some games this weekend.

Well look at that, I found seven things! OK, six things, whatever. For more quick takes, visit Jen. Have a great weekend everyone! :)

NFP Awareness Week

It's NFP Awareness Week! Natural Family Planning is so good for people -- body and soul. There are so many benefits to practicing NFP:
  • It can help identify health issues
  • It brings spouses closer together (couples who practice NFP have a mere 2% divorce rate versus the 50% divorce rate of the general public)
  • NFP can be practiced to help avoid pregnancy when desired
  • NFP can be practiced to help achieve pregnancy when desired
  • So many more I can't list them all here!

The people at iusenfp.com have a ton of these funny graphics.

There are lots of great writers sharing insights and data about NFP this week especially. If you're interested in learning more, here are some excellent resources:

My body ROCKS.

There's SO much information out there. NFP is healthy and beneficial for women, good for men, good for couples. Educate yourself!

I'm not into the whole zombies thing, but even I found this funny!
